Why Are The Company Ratings Important?

Company ratings give you an indication of the financial strength of the company that is backing your insurance policy. If we fall upon hard times and your insurance company fails, then your insurance policies could possibly become worthless. Most people aren't concerned when they are simply buying term life insurance, but if you were to become "uninsurable" during the time that your term policy is in effect most companies allow you to "convert" your term policy to permanent coverage. In this case, you would want the insurer to be a high quality company otherwise you will be tied to a weak company.

There are several different agencies that rate life insurance companies, some of the most widely followed are:

A.M. Best
Standard & Poors
Moodys
Weiss Ratings

Each of these has a slightly different rating system and I would say A.M. Best is probably the most likely to give an insurer a high rating and Weiss is the most likely to give them a failing grade.
